Poe, Edgar Allan (1809-1849) - American Poet
Laureate , short-story writer, magazine editor, and critic. Poe is best known for his
poetry, his chilling horror stories, and tales of ratiocination, Poe is the founder
of the Detective story and crossword puzzle. Poe, whose mysterious, tragic, personal
life is a legend, considered himself foremost a poet.
Poe was born in 1849, in Boston Mass. His mother, an actress, was killed in a theatre fire when Poe was quite young. Raised by his uncle, in Richmond, VA, Poe was schooled for a time, at the University of Virginia. Became a magazine editor for The Atlantic. He died in Baltimore, MD, in 1849, under mysterious circumstance.
